Janmashtami also known as “Krishnashtmai” Saatam Aatham”, “Gokulashtami”, “Ashtami Rohini” “Srikrishna Jayanthi” is celebrating the birth of an Avatar of Vishnu-“Bhagwan Krishna”.
Lord Vishnu decided to take birth in the earth as human being to curtail all the evils of the wicked Kamsa, the king of Mathura, who declared himself as the king by putting his father, Ugrasenan, in prison. In the meantime, at the wedding of Kamsa’s sister Devaki, he heard a heavenly voice, that the child of his sister will take birth to kill him. Though Kamsa managed put Devaki and her husband Vasudev into jail and kill all the six children, the seventh child and the eighth one, escaped due to divine intervention. That eighth child was, Krishna, the avatar of Lord Vishnu,
Devotees fast, sometimes without having a single drop of water, for the entire day and break it after the birth of Lord Krishna at midnight.
Lord krishna's idols and sculptures are the most important decorative. Devotees perform pooja with the help of the idols. The idol of the Lord is bathed in panchamrit, which is later distributed among the devotees.
