Mythological Tales:
Out of so many legends behind this festival, welcoming Lord Rama, by his beloved brother Bharata along with the people of Ayodhya, with rows of lights after his long 14 years of exile in the forest, is the most prominent one. For southern India, it is on this day Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura. For Sikh community, it is the celebration of people on the arrival of their Sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Ji at Amritsar, after he was freed from imprisonment. It is also considered as a “Harvest Festival” and believed that farmers first started it in India after they reaped their harvests. They celebrated with joy and offered praises to God for granting them a good crop.
Procedures & Rituals:
The occasion of Deepawali is the ideal time for cleaning, whitewashing houses and painting decorative designs or rangolis on floors and walls. On this occasion new clothes are bought and family members get together, to offer prayers, distribute sweets and light up their homes.In the evening lamps are lighted and crackers are burst. Karva Means a small clay pot and chouth means fourth day.Karva Chauth is observed on the fourth day of the dark fortnight of Ashwin, which is also called Kartik.
History:
This is the festival of Hindu married women.After their marriage the girls live in her husbands house with her husband’s family members.There is no communication between these two family members. So the girls would befriend another woman who would be her friend or sister for life,to sort out any issue of the bride with her husband or in-laws. They would also treat each other like real sisters. Karva Chauth is started to celebrate this relationship and strengthen it.Another legend is related to a woman named Karva, who saved her husband from death as he caught by a crocodile, by forcing Yama to save her husband and kill the crocodile using the power of a devoted wife.
Procedure:
Women, especially newly wedded, wake up in the dawn and worship Shiva, Parvati, Ganesh, Kartikeya and the moon. Mothers-in-law give their daughters-in-law sumptuous food called 'Sargi' to eat before sunrise, as the fast starts just before sunrise and ends only after worshiping the moon at night. Women get baya, a clay pot, with full of goodies from their mother meant for their mother-in-law. In the evening women dressed up in bridal finery pray for the long life and welfare of their husbands. While chanting the prayers, they pass their bayas from one to another. An elderly woman of the family narrates the legend of Karva Chauth. The fasting women first observe the moon through a sieve and then break their fastby accepting a sip of water and the first morsel of food is offered by the husband followed by a splendid dinner.

From then onwards sisters began to tie a rakhi on their brother’s wrist on the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan.Another story related with Draupathi and Krishna. Draupathi torn a strip of saree and tied it around Krishna’s wrist to stop the flow blood during Sisupal’s death.
Customs:
On this day sisters tie a sacred thread of Rakhi on brother's wrist and pray for his long life. Brothers' bless their sister and present them gifts.The family members take a bath to purify mind and body ,sisters prepare the thali for the poojan.It have the rakhi threads,kumkum powder,rice grains,diya,agarbattis and sweets. The sister then performs the arti of the brother and ties the rakhi. She then Tilaks (puts kumkum powder on the forehead) him and offers sweets
