Diwali, shortest of form of Deepawali, which means array of lights, is the biggest festival in India. Due to its acceptance across the country, Diwali is considered as the national festival of India. It is mainly celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains, for different reasons. Lighting of Diyas and candles, fireworks and exchanging of gifts are the main attraction of this festival.
Mythological Tales:
Out of so many legends behind this festival, welcoming Lord Rama, by his beloved brother Bharata along with the people of Ayodhya, with rows of lights after his long 14 years of exile in the forest, is the most prominent one. For southern India, it is on this day Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura. For Sikh community, it is the celebration of people on the arrival of their Sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Ji at Amritsar, after he was freed from imprisonment. It is also considered as a “Harvest Festival” and believed that farmers first started it in India after they reaped their harvests. They celebrated with joy and offered praises to God for granting them a good crop.
Procedures & Rituals:
The occasion of Deepawali is the ideal time for cleaning, whitewashing houses and painting decorative designs or rangolis on floors and walls. On this occasion new clothes are bought and family members get together, to offer prayers, distribute sweets and light up their homes. In the evening lamps are lighted and crackers are burst. Lakshmi Puja:
Lakshmi pooja is important in Diwali. The deity of Lakshmi symbolizes wealth and prosperity, and her blessings are invoked for a good year ahead.
