Number of legends associated with Raksha Bandhan.Popular story related with Indra and Indrani.Once Lord Indra was facing reverses in battle against demons led by king Vritra.At this time Indra sought help of Guru Brihaspathi.The sage advised him to tie a sacred thread powered by mantras on the auspicious day of Shravan Purnima.Indrani tied the sacred thread on Indra’s wrist and Indra win the battle. From then onwards sisters began to tie a rakhi on their brother’s wrist on the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan.Another story related with Draupathi and Krishna. Draupathi torn a strip of saree and tied it around Krishna’s wrist to stop the flow blood during Sisupal’s death.
Customs:
On this day sisters tie a sacred thread of Rakhi on brother's wrist and pray for his long life. Brothers' bless their sister and present them gifts.The family members take a bath to purify mind and body ,sisters prepare the thali for the poojan.It have the rakhi threads,kumkum powder,rice grains,diya,agarbattis and sweets. The sister then performs the arti of the brother and ties the rakhi. She then Tilaks (puts kumkum powder on the forehead) him and offers sweets
